HIGHLIGHTS
BREAKFAST CLUB OF CANADA
Government
Relations
Over the past year, Breakfast Club of Canada actively pursued its efforts to engage elected officials at
all levels of government to reaffirm the strategic and fundamental importance of school food programs.
In a context of political unpredictability and numerous socio-economic pressures, including rising
food insecurity and U.S. tariffs, our engagement with government bodies has remained essential.
School nutrition has also been explicitly mentioned in several federal election platforms, including
those of the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québécois.
Against this backdrop, we have continued to advocate, with diligence and conviction, the need to
invest in sustainable solutions to ensure that every child has equitable access to nutritious food to
support their well-being and success.
ADVOCACY AND ENGAGEMENT
BREAKFAST ON THE HILL
November 20, 2024 saw the third edition of our Breakfast on the Hill event, a day of parliamentary lobbying to
advance agreements under the National School Food Program. To mark National Child Day, we met with Jenna
Sudds, former Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. Through our discussions with the various
parties, we were able to propose concrete solutions for implementing this program.
In October, the Club also met with Lawrence MacAulay, former Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and
other elected officials, to outline the needs and realities of schools. These preliminary discussions raised
awareness among decision-makers of the importance of breakfast programs, and laid the groundwork for the
November 20 meetings.
